“In your light I learn how to love. In your beauty, how to make poems. You dance inside my chest where no-one sees you, but sometimes I do, and that sight becomes this art.”- Rumi

Tonight's Full Moon falls in the star of Rohiṇī, a lunar asterism blooming with desire and creative passions. The Moon will be seen next to the very bright red star Aldebaran (Rohiṇī) as it peaks. Rohiṇī is the Red eye of Taurus the bull. This star is filled with love, lust, creativity and desires for the good things in life. Rohiṇī is said to be the Moon's favorite wife and companion, it is also the brightest star on the ecliptic band. The astronomical truths are embedded into the myth. The Moon often occults this star (completely covers it in its passing) which may be another layer of observation that the ancients were witness to.

The shakti for Rohiṇī is Rohana Shakti- The power to make things grow. Taurus is a fixed, earth Rashi (sign) in nature, this is not a easy to move zone of the zodiac, and at times stubborn like a bull? The Moon reaches its point of greatest strength in Taurus,  elementally we then get a supportive combination of Earth (Taurus) and Water (Moon). Making Rohiṇī nakshatra which spans 10°- 23°40’ of zodiacal arc, the whole mid portion of Taurus, a fertile field for growth and creativity.

This is a very auspicious star to grow your resources, and express yourself in the arts. Cows are symbols of wealth, health, and security, as sustainers of life and prosperity. This lunar asterism can be directly connected to farming and agriculture, with the shudra (working class). But it can also bring about a feeling of lust and lavishness, with the constant pursuit of pleasure never filling the void. Rohiṇī is one of the four royal star of Perisa, that mark a square through opposite quadrants of the sky. Magha (Regulus) in Leo, Jyestha (Antares) in Scorpio, and Shatabisha (Formalhaut) in Aquarius being the others.

Auspicious activities for this Full Moon cycle (until the next Full Moon) include caring for the earth, herbalism, growing resources, love and creative expression. Creating the right circumstances for growth to occur in our community, and personal lives is supported now. Mars energy on the Full Moon may create a hurdle, or turn up the heat on passions. Since Mars is still combust until December 19th (invisible due to its apparent proximity to the Sun), there may be tension, or slower results until mid December. Likewise, the best of this period may not be felt until after Venus moves into Libra on November 29th as Taurus is ruled by Venus and at that point Venus will not longer be in its point of greatest weakness, but Swa (in its own abode, home, and with strength) after a trying time for the planet Venus that began in June. The rocky period for Venus has been putting love, money and relationships under the microscope, and potentially allowing for a renewed sense of authenticity to emerge in our creative and relational spheres.

We can witness the beautiful morning sightings of Venus at dawn in the eastern horizon from November 27th-30th as it passes over bright star Chitra (Spica) and makes its way into Libra.

In the stories connected to Rohiṇī it is said that Kamadhenu, the wish fulfilling cow was the property of sage Vashishta. One day a King visited the Ashram where this Kamadhenu and Vashishta stayed, and suddenly the Ashram was able to supply all this food to feed the Kings army, the King didn’t understand how this could happen. The King was envious and he wanted the wish fulfilling cow. The Rishi, Vasishtha told the King, the cow will not provide for you unless you do a certain amount of purification. So the King stayed and did the purification practice for a very long time until the cow would fulfill his wishes. But, by the time the King was ready and Kamadhenu, was given to him to bestow his wishes, he didn’t want them fulfilled anymore because he had become enlightened.

“Look at the moon in the sky, not the one in the lake.”-Rumi
